The Beaver FM
Thanks to modern technology, the Beaver operates from a small room constructed in the garage of Kim and Doug Hayden, well-known local realtors. How small is the room? The average person can’t stand upright and there is only room for a desk, a few chairs and the equipment that runs the 10-watt station.
But the Beaver staff who have gathered to work here “the little radio station that could” don’t seem to mind. The DJ's are cracking jokes on air and kibitzing as if they’ve been doing this for years.
“Our coverage area is the southeast Calgary communities of Douglasdale, McKenzie, McKenzie Towne, New Brighton, Copperfield, new areas like Seton, Mahogany, Auburn Bay, Cranston, that’s where our focus really is,” they said.
“We really want people out there to know about the Beaver and if they have different events that are going on, or things they think we should know about, we would be more than welcome to put that on the air.”
The Owners say that the station is trying to rebuild the sense of community that Calgarians often lament has disappeared as the city has morphed into a modern cosmopolitan centre.
The Beaver will play popular music from “five decades,” according to the DJ's, and cover just about any genre.
“They’ll hear everything from the latest releases that come out today to the classic rock n’ roll tracks of the 60s, 70s, 80s, and everything in between,”
Listeners can contact the Beaver through its web site beaverfm.ca (which is under construction), where they can find a calendar of community events and the request email if there’s a particular song they’re hankering to hear.
